Job Description

Responsible for providing clinical and distributive pharmacy services for all medications dispensed by CVS Specialty Pharmacy Network. This position, acting in its professional capacity, directs supportive personnel such as Pharmacy Service Representatives and Pharmacy Technicians in their daily activities as it relates to managing and providing these services. Other critical responsibilities include assuring positive patient therapeutic outcomes by assessing therapy compliance and effectiveness, including appropriate coordination with other health care professionals. This position also impacts pharmacy operating efficiency and profitability by maximizing resources available to the pharmacist to provide cost-effective medication management and distributive functions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1-Responsible for the management of clinical and professional activities associated with providing these services to CVS Health patients. This includes professional functions such as patient assessment, medication profile review, management of side-effects, monitoring compliance and persistency, and appropriate coordination with other healthcare professionals.

2-Assures the client is being managed to appropriate CVS Health standards by using tools such as drug specific therapeutic guidelines to manage the clinical process. Ensures all outcomes associated with the clinical aspect of patient management are appropriately documented in applicable computer system and all necessary follow-up items are acted upon in a timely manner consistent with good pharmacy care.

3-Directs supportive personnel, such as Pharmacy Technicians in the daily activities they perform as it pertains to clinical and distributive activities. They ensure these activities are performed to CVS Health standards and in accordance with written SOP’s and regulatory constraints.

4-Participates in activities associated with patient education and training. This includes activities such as counseling patients on uses for medication, how to properly store and administer, how to manage side-effects and to provide positive feedback to ensure patient compliance and persistency. These functions may be performed telephonically or with written material as appropriate.

5-The Staff Pharmacist is the primary clinician available to patients after hours, via the on-call network, to ensure the patient has access to CVS Health clinical and distributive services as appropriate.

6-The Staff Pharmacist has primary responsibility related to distributive services to ensure the correct medication is appropriately picked, packed, and distributed to patients. Activities associated with these services include checking orders that are prepared for delivery by supportive personnel in a manner that prevents errors from occurring.

7-Builds and maintains positive relationships with internal and external customers including physicians, nurses, and payors, and vendors. Assists management in retention of potential lost payers and/or patients.

8-Evaluates/triages difficult customer service problems related to customers, physicians, vendors, and other parties, both internal and external to ensure prompt and appropriate responses.

9-Supports/participates in performance improvement by collecting data, providing input, and attending team meetings.

10-Requests medical documents as required from physicians, clinics, or treatment centers as needed for reimbursement and prior authorization activities.

11-The Staff Pharmacist is involved with responding to payer and regulatory body audits. This includes the collocation and evaluation of specific criteria as defined by the auditing agency and presenting them in a manner consistent with CVS Health policies.

Required Qualifications

-Current state of Hawaii Pharmacist License in good standing

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in specialty pharmacy is preferred but not required


-Pharmacy degree from an accredited school of pharmacy
